Gray Squirrel

Grey squirrels rely on scent to find the nuts and acorns  they bury in the autumn; they do not remember where they stored them.

Grey squirrels communicate with each other by making sounds and body movements, such as tail flicking.

They are active during the day, foraging for food and building nests called dreys in trees using leaves, twigs, and other materials.

Grey squirrels are known for their agility and climbing abilities, using their sharp claws and strong hind legs to navigate tree branches and structures.

They communicate using a variety of vocalizations, including chirps, barks, and chatters, as well as body language and scent marking.

Grey squirrels are prolific breeders, with females producing two litters of young per year, typically in the spring and summer months.

Despite their name, grey squirrels can exhibit a range of color variations, including black, brown, and albino individuals.

Grey squirrels have been introduced to various regions outside of their native range, including Europe, where they have become invasive species and have had negative impacts on native red squirrel populations.

While grey squirrels are considered pests in some areas due to their habit of raiding bird feeders, damaging trees, and competing with native wildlife, they also play important roles in ecosystems as seed dispersers and prey for predators.
